What It Costs to Self-Publish a Book in 2026

“How much will this cost me?” is the first question nearly every author asks us, usually right after “Is my book any good?” The honest answer is anywhere from almost nothing to several thousand dollars. What you spend depends on how many of the steps you do yourself and how much help you want with the rest.

Here is what each piece of self-publishing costs in 2026, where the money goes, and three sample budgets.

The short answer

Uploading a book to Amazon KDP and IngramSpark is free. What costs money is making the book good enough that readers finish it and recommend it. For most first-time authors, that means a professional edit, a professional cover and clean formatting. Budget roughly $1,000 to $5,000 for a full-length book done properly, with editing as the largest line.

1. Editing: the biggest line, and the most important

Editing is usually priced per word, so longer books cost more. There are three main kinds, and most books need at least two of them:

  • Developmental editing looks at the big picture: structure, pacing, plot or argument, and what to cut or add.
  • Copyediting works line by line on grammar, clarity, word choice and consistency.
  • Proofreading is the last check of the formatted book for typos and layout errors.

The Editorial Freelancers Association’s 2026 rate survey puts median copyediting rates at about 2 to 5 cents a word, proofreading at about 1 to 4.5 cents, and developmental editing at about 3 to 8 cents. Our own rates sit below those medians for Midwest authors:

EditOur rate (fiction / nonfiction)80,000-word novel
Manuscript assessment0.8¢ a word ($300 minimum)$640
Developmental edit2¢ / 3¢ a word$1,600
Copyedit1.5¢ / 2¢ a word$1,200
Proofread0.8¢ / 1.2¢ a word$640

Not sure which edit you need? Our free 1,000-word sample edit will tell you, and you’ll get a written quote for the whole manuscript.

2. Cover design

Readers really do judge a book by its cover, especially in a thumbnail on Amazon. An ebook needs only a front cover; a paperback needs a full wrap with spine and back cover, sized to your page count. Freelance cover designers commonly charge from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand. Ours are $250 for an ebook cover and $450 for a full print wrap.

3. Interior formatting

Formatting turns your Word file into a properly typeset print interior and a reflowable ebook for Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo. Do-it-yourself tools exist, but books with images, tables, poetry or footnotes almost always benefit from a professional. We charge $175 for ebook formatting alone and from $450 for print and ebook interiors together.

4. ISBNs

An ISBN identifies one format of one book. In the United States, ISBNs are sold by Bowker: $125 for one, $295 for ten, or $575 for 100. Each format (paperback, hardcover, ebook) needs its own number, which is why most authors buy a block of ten.

Amazon KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks and hardcovers, but it lists “Independently published” as your imprint and can be used only on KDP. Ebooks on Kindle don’t need an ISBN at all. We explain the trade-offs in Do you need your own ISBN?

5. Printing and distribution

Neither Amazon nor IngramSpark charges you to set up a book. Print-on-demand means each copy is printed when someone orders it, and the printing cost comes out of the sale price.

  • Amazon KDP: a black-and-white paperback over 110 pages costs $1.00 plus 1.2 cents a page to print. A 200-page 6×9 book costs $3.40. At a $14.99 list price you earn 60% of the price minus printing, or about $5.59 a copy on Amazon.com. Ebooks priced from $2.99 to $9.99 can earn a 70% royalty, less a small delivery fee.
  • IngramSpark: title setup is free, and as of February 2026 revisions are free too. Books in its global distribution network pay a 1.875% market access fee, and you set the wholesale discount that bookstores and libraries receive.

Most of our authors use both: KDP for Amazon sales and IngramSpark to reach bookstores and libraries. Here’s why we use both.

6. Copyright registration and the small stuff

Your work is copyrighted the moment you write it, but registering with the U.S. Copyright Office (copyright.gov) is what lets you sue for infringement. Online registration costs $45 to $65 depending on the application type. Add a few author copies and a proof copy, usually under $50 together.

7. Marketing and an author platform

A book nobody hears about doesn’t sell. At minimum, plan for an author website and an Amazon Author Central profile. Our Author Platform package is $1,050 and includes a three-page author site, a reader newsletter and a 90-day launch plan.

Three sample budgets

BudgetWhat it includesApproximate cost
Bare bones (80,000 words)Proofread only, DIY cover and formatting, free KDP ISBN$650 to $800
Professional ebook (up to 60,000 words)Our Ebook Launch package: proofread, ebook formatting, cover and KDP setup$995
Print and ebook, done right (up to 80,000 words)Our Publish-Ready package: copyedit and proofread, print and ebook interiors, full cover, copyright filing, KDP and IngramSpark setup (ISBNs at cost)$2,450 plus ISBNs

If your manuscript needs a developmental edit first, add that before the package. It costs less to fix structure before the line-by-line work begins.

Where to save, and where not to

Save on marketing extras, fancy hardcovers and large print runs; print-on-demand means you never need a garage full of books. Don’t save on editing or the cover. Those are what readers notice, and they’re the hardest things to fix after your book is out and the reviews are in.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to self-publish a book?

Uploading to Amazon KDP and IngramSpark is free. Doing it professionally usually costs $1,000 to $5,000 for a full-length book, with editing as the largest expense. At Pasque & Prayrie, a copyedit and proofread of an 80,000-word novel is $1,840, and the Publish-Ready package with editing, covers, formatting and setup is $2,450.

Is it free to publish on Amazon KDP?

Yes. KDP charges nothing to set up a book. Printing costs for paperbacks are deducted from each sale, and ebook royalties are 35% or 70% depending on price.

What is the most expensive part of self-publishing?

Editing, because it is priced per word. A copyedit typically runs 1.5 to 5 cents a word, so an 80,000-word book costs $1,200 or more.
